Spencer Gonzales, Board Advisor
Spencer_Gonzales@test.comWhen my wife, Kim, and I had kids, we knew they would play sports and got them involved in every sport to see which one would stick. During a year-long work stint in Charleston, SC, Lauryn, the oldest of 3, came home asking to tryout for the middle school volleyball team with her friends. This was the start of my family’s volleyball journey thru our daughters Lauryn and Marley.
After the middle school season, Lauryn was asked to join the local travel team, Mt. Pleasant Volleyball (MVP). The following year, we moved back to GA; Peachtree City to be exact. It just so happened to be A5 South’s inaugural year and we attended the info session in a gym with no walls, as construction was still in progress. Lauryn began her first season with A5 that year with Marley following her sister soon thereafter, and I became the official game video recorder.
After 3 seasons, we moved to Marietta and attended Walton High School. After winning the first of many state championships, Lauryn joined 16-Gabe as OH and Marley made 13-Jackie as MB. The level of competition in the gym and during tournaments was unbelievable. After our first season ‘up north,’ Marley decided to end her volleyball career and Lauryn continued to play for 17-Jing (first A5 team to beat 17-Ping) and then 18-Scott. Lauryn was recruited by and committed to play for FSU Seminoles. Once our Club career was finished, I was asked and agreed to serve on A5 Board with honor. A5 has truly been a blessing and a fun ride for myself and my family. We have made life long friends and memories and would teleport back to 13s and do it all over again in a minute!

In addition to her current position as head volleyball coach at Xavier University of Louisiana, Hannah still finds time to coach a club team and play in adult indoor and sand tournaments.
While Hannah played for A5, Joe was the parent in charge of food for her teams, earning the nickname, “Food Dude.” He still knows her 18’s team Subway® order by heart. Always the overachiever, prior to becoming the Food Dude, he graduated from the University of Southern Cal with a BS, Loyola University Chicago with a Ph.D. in pharmacology and a law degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. Before entering law, he served on the faculty of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
